Beaks Clinch South Title With Wins over SWOCC

ALBANY, Ore. - Linn-Benton swept Saturday's doubleheader against Soutwestern Oregon, 2-1 and 8-1, in NWAC South Region baseball action Saturday afternoon at Dick McClain Field. The wins secured the South Region title for the Roadrunners.

Linn-Benton (31-7, 27-3 in NWAC South) has just six games remaining, including tomorrow's doubleader at Soutwestern Oregon in Coos Bay. Umpqua, currently in second place in the NWAC South, is 18-10.

It's the sixth consecutive South Region title for the Roadrunners dating back to the 2017 season. There were no NWAC Championships in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid, so no official Regional titles were awarded. Linn-Benton earned the honor in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023 and now 2024.

The Roadrunners will now automatically advance to the NWAC Baseball Championship Tournament May 23-27 at Lower Columbia College as the #1 Seed from the South Region.

In game one, the teams battled through seven scoreless innings before the Lakers scored in the top of the eighth. But the Roadrunners tied the game at 1-1 when Aidan Dougherty scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the inning.

Cameron Ordway's walk off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Sam Giansante for the win. Russell Holly earned the win pitching one inning in relief for the Roadrunners.

In game two, the Roadrunners' bats came alive for seven hits, led by two apiece from Dougherty and Spencer Sullivan, who also had three RBIs.

Ever Lamm earned the win for Linn-Benton, giving up just two hits and striking out six batters in five innings of work.

After Sunday's matchup at Southwestern, the Roadrunners have a bye week before squaring off with Lane in the final series of the regular season May 9 and 11.
